A Nod to Summer

Another school year is coming to an end. We have come a long way this year. at the beginning of this year the average age of our collection was 1985. After extensive weeding, the average age of our collection is now 1991. WOW! We still have a long way to go mind you, but we are off to a great start to getting this collection into shape. And, we certainly did not spend all year weeding! Some of the things we also did this year are:
  • won two Donor's Choose Grants
  • added over 700 books to the collection
  • started Read-A-Latte's
  • collaborated with many teachers
  • held book clubs with Mrs. Anthony the literacy coach
  • checked out lots of books
  • gave many book talks
  • held book-passes
  • had three book fairs

Now: over the summer, students, you MUST do some serious reading. Research proves that students who read over the summer do better in school than students who don't. Take advantage of the summer reading program offered by the Union County Carnegie Library and the school district.

Reading has the power to change your life and expand your horizons. Reading adds to the experiences of your life. I do not know what it was like to live in the depression. But through reading a book, I can learn about what life was like for many people during the depression. Our life is a collection of our experiences. Add to those experiences and enrich your life by picking up a book. Enjoy a book on your front porch, under the shade of a tree, by a pool or a lake or a pond. Take a book with you wherever you go and you will never be bored.
