Tech Petting Zoo Enjoyed by Teachers and Students
In order to learn how to use a new tech device, sometimes you just have to play with it. Today, Sims teachers were encouraged to do just that as they were treated to a "Tech Petting Zoo" in the library. Mr. David Sniffin, a consultant from the SC State Library brought a hoard of iPads, e-readers and video cameras for the faculty to play with. Mrs. Tazerouti and Mr. Barnado, Director of Technology for Union County Schools, also volunteered their iPads. Mr. Sniffin served as our Tech Wizard as he answered questions about the devices he brought with him as well as questions teachers had about their own devices. One of the many interesting tidbits we learned today from Mr. Sniffin is that some e-books are now coming with soundtracks. "It was nice to be able to look at these devices and ask questions in a non-sales type environment where there is no pressure to buy something." said one teacher. The Petting Zoo also provided a venue for teachers to share their own expertise with fellow participants. Teachers were encouraged to consider how devices such as iPads could impact instruction or teacher productivity. How can we design effective instruction that will appeal to students who enjoy using these devices? Students swarmed the Petting Zoo when the teachers were not around and also enjoyed playing with the devices. Many of them wanted to know when the Petting Zoo would be coming back.
